Some people says the oneway is bad, some gives it merits. But no one has come to an conclusion about the front oneway diff. After a quite sometimes of drifting and racing with front oneway and collecting feedbacks of front oneway oriented drifters, I have come to a conclusion of drifting with oneway diff.
As everyone might know, in grip racing, front one way is only used in large tracks and brake is barely used. You all should know braking in front oneway car acts like a handbrake so it can cause spinning at highspeed. So, it's the same thing with drifting.
Why is front oneway not meant for beginners?
With front oneway, you need to be very stable in throttle control. If you realease your throttle in the middle of the drift in the middle of the slide, instead of slowing your car, you will spin it as your car get out of control. This happen a lot to beginners who overslide their car, realleasing throttle will stop the car and you can get back tothe track right up. This only works with front ball diff or gear diff. Other things, you must be very very careful using brake, and braking with front oneway doesn't function as braking as many people think.
What are the disadvantages of front oneway?
- Hard to control braking, brake function as handbrake
- easy to get spinning and losing control
- hard to control if you are not advanced drifters
What are the advantages of front oneway?
- Works like a lock front diff when on throttle
- Works like a front ball diff or RWD car when off throttle
- brake functions as handbrake
- more control on braking
- more control over all
So why is front oneway meant for advaned users?
If you have been into drifting for quite a while. You skill is good and you are very stable in controlling your throttle, braking is no longer that important in your drifting style and you barely use brake anymore. You might not notice but it's true. You drift throughout corners smoothly without losing control. Therefore the braking function give you more control of your car. Realeasing throttle in front oneway is like kicking the clutch, and pushing the brake functions like handbrake.
If you want to drift through tight corners, and your car tends to understeer, apply handbrake will give you immediate drift.
If you are on long drifts, kicking (or engaging) the clutch will give you better angles and longer slides.
Also, when on throttle, the front wheels act like lock diff -> easier to drive, and when off throttle, the front wheels act like ball diff -> tighter turns.
I don't say that front oneway fits everyone, specially to agressive drivers. Front oneway is another option for calm & skillful drifters to try and experience a whole new style of controlling. At my point of view, I think driving front oneway is somehow similar to full scale drifting.
